This August, grab your friends and loved ones and head down to the Fleurieu for Berg’s Backyard Sessions—a fun-filled weekend event of delicious food, laid-back tunes and, of course, outstanding vino.

Hosted by favourite Sellicks Beach winery, Berg Herring Wines, this two-day event, which kicks off on Saturday, August 12th, brings the perfect chilled vibes we all need after a hectic work week. The winery, which is nestled in the heart of the beautiful Sellick’s coastline, provides the most idyllic and picturesque setting to relax and unwind with your crew for this event.

Owned by couple Chloe and Sam, Berg Herring Wines is in its third year and is looking forward to hosting more of these events moving forward. ‘This is our third event at the winery,’ says Chloe, ‘but we’re hoping to run these on a more frequent basis, where we can showcase our wines with the beautiful backdrop of the McLaren Vale region.’

The event, which will feature pop-up live music and food all weekend, will be delivering delicious dumplings by The Pickled Kitchen on Saturday and mouth-watering brisket and pulled pork burgers from The Rub Society on Sunday—with both serving up a feast from 12-6 pm or until they fly out the kitchen!

‘We will have musical entertainment to set the atmosphere on Saturday, and the talented Jesse Francis will be wrapping up the entertainment with acoustic vibes on Sunday from 1-5 pm’, says Chloe. With a marquee pitched on the outside lawn of the winery and firepits to keep you all warm and toasty, it’s the perfect spot to take in the views of the views of both the hills and ocean and enjoy the festivities.

While you’re there, don’t miss the chance to explore the SALA exhibition on display inside the cellar door – Art & Artists of Sellicks Beach—which is open for the entire month of August. ‘This exhibition will showcase the work of talented local artists or work that features the Sellicks Beach region, and this will just add an extra layer of creativity and inspiration for you to take in during the event,’ says Chloe.

As for the drinks, Berg Herring Wines takes pride in producing small-batch, premium McLaren Vale wines with a focus on emerging varieties, and these will be on show throughout Berg’s Backyard Sessions. ‘We love creating alternative wines like our Fiano, Nero D’Avola and Saperavi Barbera, but we also have the classics like our Grenache and Shiraz—so there really is something for everyone,’ says Chloe.

The boutique cellar door at Berg Herring Wines, housed in a converted heritage sandstone chapel built in 1862, provides a unique and charming atmosphere for wine tastings. With limited tasting slots available over the Backyard Sessions weekend, it’s recommended to book in advance to secure a spot for your group.

And whilst Chloe and Sam have both been in the wine industry for most of their careers, it wasn’t until they purchased this property in Sellicks that the opportunity came to pursue winemaking full time. ‘We started making our own wines as a small side hustle, but after converting the old church at our Sellicks property into a cellar door, we decided to commit and grow it into what it is today,’ says Chloe.

Whether you’re a wine enthusiast, a music lover, an art admirer, or simply seeking a relaxing weekend getaway, Berg’s Backyard Sessions at Berg Herring Winery has something for everyone. No bookings are needed for the food and outdoor area—it’s first in, first served—so gather your friends, pack your picnic blankets, and get ready for an unforgettable weekend of good times, good food, and good vibes!
