Hither & Yon’s Malcolm and Richard Leask have been crowned McLaren Vale’s prestigious Bushing Monarchs for 2022 at the McLaren Vale Wine Show, with the winery’s 2021 Aglianico named ‘Best Wine in Show’.

The Bushing Monarch is an annual title awarded to the winemaker of highest scoring individual wine. This is the second time the Leask brothers have won this honourable title, following their Nero d’Avola taking out the same award in 2019. Malcolm and Richard are thrilled to win the top trophy again in 2022.

“Each year we observe, fine-tune and adjust. These vines and wines manage to exceed expectations year on year. We can’t think of a better variety for our future than this southern Italian beauty, it’s such a joy to grow and make,” says Malcolm.

“We shifted the style for our 2021 Aglianico, looking for vibrancy and juiciness, but true to its roots with the trademark rusticity. This ancient noble grape is a rising star for us and ideally suited to our growing environment,” adds Malcolm.

Richard Leask, the wineries Viticulturalist, planted 20 rows of the highly regarded variety on an alluvial creek bed of soil, helping to tone back the wine’s natural vigour.

“Aglianico was the very first alternative variety Hither & Yon planted, and was championed by our winemaking neighbour, Justin Lane. It’s well suited climatically to our region and tolerates drier conditions and holds a lot of natural acid that helps to balance the wine in production.

Aglianico has a strong future for us, and for our region. This trophy is testament of that,” states Richard.

For Hither & Yon, taking care of the soil and people comes first. Their vision has always been to make better wines with a lighter footprint.

In 2021 Hither & Yon became South Australia’s first Carbon Neutral certified wine brand, and in 2022 became Sustainable Winegrowing Australia certified for both their wine brand and vineyards.

Hither & Yon’s home vineyards are in the eastern foothills of McLaren Vale, and their boutique cellar door is situated in the village of Willunga.
