As we bid a final farewell to the year that was, we thought here at Glam Adelaide, what better way to celebrate the crazy fun we’ve had this year than by looking back at the incredible ventures and venues that have happened this year.

2021 has been a rollercoaster, and the hospitality industry has shown strength, determination and resilience these last 12 months. What better way to show an industry that’s done it tough lately some love than a cup (or two!) of coffee with friends at a delicious long brunch.

From a Euro-inspired delicatessen to cafés with barbershops next door – you won’t be hard-pressed to find an incredible place to brunch with your girlfriends.

In no particular order, here are incredible places that opened this year:

30 Acres

Brought to you by the hospitality wonders behind the beloved 303 By the Sea and Oar, 30 Acres planted its roots in Norwood this year. Owners Rik and Alex Fisher created a casual, family-friendly brunch destination where products grown and sourced on their 30-acre farm in Ashton, which the delightful cafe gets its namesake from

Featuring a bustling, open kitchen on the ground floor and a beautiful mezzanine bakery, 30 Acres shows its point of difference from many of its counterparts by focusing on South Australian produce throughout its offerings.

Menu highlights include a wood-oven cooked chicken served with wilted kale, and a green olive and lemon sauce and a breakfast showstopper of pork and fennel coil sausage accompanied with beans and hash browns.

Described as offering a modern Australian menu, 30 Acres is currently open for breakfast, brunch and lunch, with Rik and Alex also keen to keep the space open late into the evenings – making it the perfect place for a mid-morning pastry or late long lunch in the sunshine.

Find 30 Acres at 233 The Parade, Norwood. Read more here.

Bottega Bandito

The little sister café of Anchovy Bandit – Bottega Bandito – found its home on vibrant Rose Street earlier this year, opening its doors next door to the popular pizzeria.

With splashes of millennial pink and walls lined with preserves and pickles, Bottega Bandito transports you straight to corner store delicatessens in the heart of Italy.

The modest yet striking fit-out suits its menu, which serves up classic brunch bites and sandwiches that pack a flavourful punch using simple ingredients and pairings – sopressa, fermented chilli, fior di latte, tomato, basil, and pickled chilli has never tasted so good.

Expect house made pickles, sugo, fresh pasta, pastries and meats cured in-house (which you can purchase to take home!), all in collaboration with local farmers and producers.

Hospo-heavyweight trio, Alex Bennett, Josh Talbot, and Oliver Brown opened Bottega Bandito in February, appointing Shane Wilson, previously of Hentley Farm, Bistro Dom, and Orana, is executive chef across both Anchovy Bandit and Bottega Bandito.

You can find Botegga Bandito at 98 Prospect Rd, Prospect. Read more about them here.

Loxley

You can get fresh coffee, cakes and even a fresh cut at Loxley – the new café which took over the former Tall Henry space in Kent Town.

Opening its doors in March, the once mechanic workshop has been transformed into a lofty space, with an industrial fit-out and sleek furnishings. From quick bites to long lunches and sweet treats, Loxley is the perfect place to perch after shopping in the CBD or catching up with mates.

Slinging fresh sarnies and salads, Loxley champions locally sourced South Australian produce throughout their menu. For sweet tooth South Australians, the café also stocks Abbotts and Kinney’s fluffy pastries for you to indulge in.

Brought to you by the team behind Attaboy (who also happens to be next door!), owner Robby Lippett has poured lots of love into his new neighbour.

Find Loxley at 20 The Parade West, Kent Town. Read about them here.

Lockwood General

The crew behind CBD’s beloved Peter Rabbit and hot spot Bloom opened yet another café this year, with The Lockwood General in Burnside opening in March.

The new spot sits in a heritage-listed building, in what was formerly an 1800’s general store, from which it gets its title, Lockwood General. Co-owner Adam Robinson says the location inspired not only the name, but also the space’s close-knit feel.

Harnessing its history, Lockwood General has created a general store feel, making pickles, perseveres and jams for brunch-goers to purchase.  These homemade small batch goods are then intertwined throughout the venue’s brunch offerings, share plates and cocktails, featuring a house-made eggplant relish on charred Turkish bread, shared burrata with homemade pickled apricot jam and a fruity apricot jam-based cocktail.

Other favourite dishes include gingerbread granola with puffed grains, quinoa, yoghurt, honey and homegrown marigold leaves (a dish Robinson describes as a “warm hug from nanna”), and chunks of avo on seeded rye with whipped feta, black lime, macadamia, and green chilis.

The fit out also conjures up an old-fashioned general store, but with a very modern upgrade. It has shelves packed with ferments, coffee, liquor bottles, and knickknacks, and a sleek wood bar.

Find Lockwood General at 35 High Street, Burnside. Read more about them here.

With the help of local business The Lane Flower Studio, the cafe has become a beautiful oasis and Michael says he wants the vibe to be ‘sunny 365 days a year.’ Along with the renovation has come a revamped menu which Michael says ‘will appeal to younger people with a wider palate,’ with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options on offer.

Taking up shop in the bones in the shop of an old car detailer, Coffee in Common has a clean and crisp space with a minimalist aesthetic featuring low seating and a sleek island bar serving up an array of hot and fresh coffee with a ‘brunchy’ menu to match.
