Located down a quiet alley between Hindley Street and North Terrace near the Stamford Plaza, The Bibliotheca Bar and Book Exchange on Gresham Street in the city’s West End is celebrating ten years and new opening hours with a unique flask cocktail.
Bibliotheca, fondly referred to as Bibs, is moody, dimly lit, elegant and still something of a secret to many Adelaideans.
This bar is known for its cosy interior lined with books, little dark nooks, and intelligent conversation over candlelight.
Here you’ll find theatrical cocktails, top-shelf whisky and spirits, people making new acquaintances along the bar, or quietly sitting with a good read and a drink in hand.
Bibliotheca is part romance, part mystery and part whimsy. And if you haven’t been there yet in the past decade, add this beauty to your list.

Now, one of the city’s favourite cocktail and whisky dens is writing a brand-new chapter, opening Sundays and launching seven-day trading from October 19.
To mark the occasion, Bibliotheca debuts a fabulous new drink that’s already got people talking and collecting.
It’s called Vellichor, and it’s not your standard cocktail.
Created by venue manager Rawiri and his team, its presented inside a book and finished with a flash of smoke, this whisky creation is pure theatre. It’s rich, nostalgic and a little mysterious, inspired by that feeling of walking into a second-hand bookstore where every page smells faintly of history.
“We wanted to capture that emotion,” says Tone, one of the many experienced mixologists at Bibs.
“That moment where you open something old and beautiful, and the air changes. That’s what Vellichor is about — memory, texture and a touch of theatre.”
Built around the island whisky Port Charlotte 10 from Bruichladdich Distillery, Vellichor carries a smoky warmth that lingers. It’s stirred with Campari and sweet vermouth, balanced with just enough sweetness to make it a perfect blend.
Guests are handed a book and asked to open the cover to reveal their drink, nestled inside the pages.
True to Bibliotheca’s generous streak, the drink comes in a sleek, branded metal hip flask that guests can take home.
Guests must pour the cocktail from the flask into the prepared glass to enjoy.

“The whisky gives it this gentle campfire depth,” Tone says.
“It smells like time spent outdoors, slow-cooked food, even a bit of old wood and leather. People smell it and immediately start describing something from their past.”
“We love that people leave with something tangible,” Tone smiles. “It’s not just a drink. It’s a souvenir from a night out that means something different to everyone.”
Priced at $46, including the take-home hip flask, it will no doubt be a hit with locals and visitors alike.
The timing couldn’t be better. After years of steady devotion from whisky lovers and cocktail purists, Bibliotheca’s move to open seven days a week feels like a quiet victory. Adelaide’s late-night culture has matured, and this bar has been there for every step of it, evolving without ever losing its soul.
“People don’t just want a drink anymore,” Tone says.
“They want an experience that feels personal, that makes them slow down. That’s what we do here. Sure, it might sound like a cliché, but it’s true. Every glass tells a story.”
As the lights stay on every night from October 19, one of Adelaide’s most refined bars proves once again that sophistication doesn’t have to shout.
