A Bicycle SA Survey has revealed South Australia’s corporate cycling habits.

More than 70% of South Australians surveyed cite improved physical health followed by transport (64%) as their main motivation for riding with 32% riding for better mental health and wellbeing.  62% of participants surveyed identified the need to improve end of trip facilities.

“Providing bike facilities and a positive culture in the workplace are important steps towards encouraging colleagues to not only commute by bike, but also a way of having productive workers that take less sick days,” says Michael Bridge, General Manager of Bicycle SA.

“Leaders who understand the benefits that cycling can bring to their business have the edge over their competitors.”

People who cycle regularly take one less sick day on average each year*.

CEOs Cycle More Often

The survey has also revealed that CEOs cycle more than most other employees, with nearly 60% averaging between 5-10 hours a week and 1 in 5 riding more than 200 kilometres a week. CEOs also tend to participate in more organised rides each year and cycle more often while on holidays with more than 50% choosing to ride while overseas or interstate.

“I complete some short rides to Norton Summit or up to Crafers a couple of times during the week, but my long weekend rides is what clears my head,” says Angelique Boileau Managing Director of Boileau Business Technology and a sponsor of cycling events such as Bike SA’s Boileau Velo Coast to Coast ride.

“Riding gets my creative juices flowing and provides me with the high that sustains me to manage the daily challenges that the current business environment creates. It is not only an escape but it is keeping me fit and healthy in the process!”

The majority of CEOs (70%) also believe South Australia’s cycling culture is important when attracting prospective employees.
