Big Shed Brewing take top gong at International Beer Awards

The Viscosiraptor is a full-flavoured, full strength barley wine beer and has taken out competitors from across the world.

South Australian beers are making waves on the international scene at the moment but none more so than local legends, Big Shed Brewing. What began with two guys brewing beer in their back shed has turned into one of Australia’s most established brewing companies and are being recognised as such.

Last night, Big Shed Brewing took home the award for Best Specialty Beer at the Melbourne International Beer Awards for its knock-out beer, Viscosiraptor.

A heavy, full-flavoured beer, Viscosiraptor was originally made as a limited edition release but was kept on due to it’s popularity.

“It’s a strong beer but it’s tasty and it’s definitely one of my favourites,” says Julia Kazmierczak of Big Shed.

“We released it two years ago for a speciality dinner but it was popular so we just had to keep making it.”

The Melbourne International Beer Awards is an annual competition and is the largest of its kind in the world, assessing both draught and packaged beer and is renowned for showcasing the highest quality beer from Australia and around the world.

The Viscosiraptor came out on top of some worthy opponents from across the globe including China’s Dangge Brewing as well as some neighbouring competitors in Victoria’s Grand Ridge Brewing and Six String Brewing Company out of NSW.

“Our barley wine beer really is exceptionally good,” laughs Julia “so we’re obviously so excited with the win. It’s a huge honour.”

No strangers to an award, Big Shed Brewing have previously earned the top spot at the Adelaide Beer and Cider Awards and the Craft Beer Industry Association Awards.

Earlier this year, Big Shed Brewing were awarded the 2022 Promoting Sustainability Award for South Australia in recognition of its efforts in sustainability which include a 200kW solar system onsite and smaller but still important efforts such as collecting rainwater to use for cleaning around the brewery.

With 11 core beers and a collection of limited editions on its repertoire, Big Shed Brewing is going from strength to strength with more to come in the near future.

With the hint of another big SA collaboration on the cards as well as a new look can, this recent award is well deserved and could be one of many more to come.

Big Shed Brewing is located at 1154 Old Port Road, Royal Park.
