Big Shots Coffee expands with permanent coffee van at My Dead Grandpa market

Big Shots Coffee has announced the launch of their new coffee van, which will be permanently stationed at My Dead Grandpa.

Big Shots Coffee has announced the launch of their new coffee van, which will be permanently stationed at My Dead Grandpa, Adelaide’s biggest vintage marketplace, in the CBD. It’s another exciting step for the growing business, which shows no signs of slowing down. They already have a popular cafe in Brighton, roast and sell their own coffee beans, and offer barista courses.

Located in a prime spot at the market, the coffee van is currently serving up a range of drinks, including their signature coffee, matcha, and pour-over coffee. Owner Josh is also planning to introduce cold drip coffee soon, adding even more options to the menu. The van is still a work in progress, with new items and features being added over time.

Josh has worked on the van for a few years, making improvements to make sure it’s ready for its new permanent home. The spot at My Dead Grandpa is perfect, opening every day at 11am, with a serving window that faces onto the street, allowing customers to grab their coffee on the go.

Josh’s decision to place the van at the My Dead Grandpa came after trying out a few different locations. The market’s area is surrounded by hotels, student accommodations, and other developments, making it a prime spot to serve a steady stream of customers. With so many people nearby, Josh sees the coffee van as the perfect place to offer a “hole-in-the-wall” style coffee experience.

“It’s practically surrounded by that, so I’m very interested in leaving the van there and serving through a bit of a hole in the wall coffee-style thing,” Josh says.

While the coffee van is currently focused on its drink offerings, Josh and his team are also thinking about expanding the menu to include food. Although they haven’t made final decisions yet, some ideas include panini-style sandwiches, yoghurt pots, and other quick-to-grab options that customers can take with them.

Josh’s path to owning Big Shots Coffee is certainly an interesting one. Before diving head first into the coffee business, Josh ran an earthmoving company for 15 years and also worked in hospitality throughout his 20s.

His interest in hospo led to the opening of Big Shots Coffee’s Brighton cafe just over five years ago. Remarkably, Josh had never used an espresso machine before starting the cafe, which made the learning curve even steeper. “I hadn’t actually used an espresso machine before, so that was a bit crazy,” Josh says.

When COVID hit just three months after opening, Josh took the time to learn everything about coffee, and since then, Big Shots Coffee has only continued to grow. They roast their own beans and offer barista courses, with wholesale suppliers growing.

Josh’s choice to have a permanent spot for the new coffee van at My Dead Grandpa market is part of his commitment to growing Big Shots Coffee.
