Renowned Chef Takes The Helm At Bird In Hand

The Gallery restaurant at Bird In Hand welcomes renowned Chef Carlos Astudillo.

No trip to the Adelaide Hills is complete without a visit to the iconic and award-winning Bird in Hand Winery. We all love spending time at their cellar door, musing over the curated art, enjoying the ambience of the beautifully-lit barrel hall or enjoying a special music event or having an aperitif on the terrace overlooking the gardens. The enticement of lingering for an elegant, yet relaxed meal in The Gallery restaurant just got stronger with Chef Carlos Astudillo taking the helm.

You might have encountered the food of Chef Carlos before if you’ve had the pleasure of dining at 2KW Bar and Restaurant, George’s on Waymouth or Penfold’s Magill Estate Kitchen. With the launch of two new lunchtime dining experience, Joy Flight and Signature Flight, diners can experience elements of Chef Carlos’ Chilean heritage, combined with modern techniques.

“I love the use of lime in dishes. Ceviches are becoming more commonplace in Australia. I also appreciate flavours you may not think work together, but can be a match made in heaven. For example, our crab tagliatelle, which incorporates white chocolate. It results in a flavour combination to die for.”

Describing the two menus as “a culinary journey”, a huge drawcard for Chef Carlos joining the Bird in Hand team was the opportunity to use fresh local produce of the Adelaide Hills, including flowers, herbs, artichokes and rhubarb direct from the onsite kitchen garden. And then of course there’s the wine.

“It was the wine initially that attracted me to this role,” says Chef Carlos. “When I’m creating a menu it is always in the back of my mind, which wine from our portfolio will best match with the dish.”

We’re talking Nest Egg Shiraz with lamb rump and Honeysuckle Riesling to accompany a sweet, indulgent dessert. And with the introduction of Twilight Fridays, the public can also enjoy dinner at Bird in Hand for the first time on selected dates. It’s something Chef Carlos is very excited about.

“It’s more than just a winery or a restaurant. Everyone who works here loves what Bird in Hand stands for. We like people to linger a while longer and leave happy.”

And we’ll certainly be doing that!

The Gallery at Bird in Hand Winery is on the corner of Bird in Hand and Pfeiffer Roads at Woodside. The restaurant is open every day for lunch from Wednesday to Sunday and has just launched their Twilight Fridays Series, open for dinner on four dates – 17th and 31st March and 7th and 28th April.
