Black Squid Design has received a Gold award at the recent Design Institute of Australia Awards 2010 for its design of Patch Theatre Company’s new corporate identity.
Patch Theatre Company creates theatre for children aged 4-8 that journeys into worlds of imagination and play. In designing the new corporate identity, Black Squid Design wanted to tickle the child in all of us.
“The logo combines the spontaneity and naivety of a childlike crayon scribble with structured type to reflect the professionalism of Patch Theatre Company’s productions,” said Derek Butler, Managing Director of Black Squid Design.
“The objective was to create a logo that can be placed within an illustration and poster to create a distinctive look and feel for each production without diminishing the prominence of the Patch logo.
“The Patch logo is applied just like a patch on every poster and ad design maintaining consistency across all material however unique and colourful the designs may be. You even enter Odeon Theatre, the home of Patch Theatre Company, through a blue patch that says ‘Hello’.
“Common props in Patch productions are boxes and balls, so we incorporated these elements into the Company’s corporate material including the Repertoire book and website.
“Creating the Patch identity was serious fun. We played with colours, shapes, balls and boxes to see things through the eyes of a child. That experience was invaluable in creating design that talked to children, to commerce, and to the child in all of us. Winning the Gold was a great acknowledgement that we worked well with our client to promote their tremendous work.”
