Bluejuice Light Up Adelaide

Last week during a less-than-stellar day at work, a friend sent me a text message with the words ‘Good luck, and don’t dare give up. Give it a little bit of vitriol!’ It was just what I needed, so you can imagine my delight hearing Sydney five-piece Bluejuice rock out to ‘Vitriol’ live at The Gov on Saturday.

Criminally underrated, Bluejuice are the epitome of feel-good music. Be it brash opener ‘Can’t Keep Up’, disco-fied ‘The Recession’ or “song to f***ing” (as lead singer Stav described it) ‘I’ll Put You On’, the band switched sounds almost as fast as front man Jake Stone removed items of clothing.

A venue as intimate as The Gov leaves little room for error. The beats were loud, the bass was heavy and the leaps into the crowd were timed with expert precision. As a live act, Bluejuice aren’t playing around.

The strength of new material ‘Act Yr Age’ and ‘On My Own’ (co-written with The Presets’ Julian Hamilton) was refreshing; alongside past hits ‘Broken Leg’ and ‘(Ain't) Telling the Truth’, it was pleasing to see how much the band has grown since 2007. And if the rest of latest album Company matches the power-pop display of their live shows, you can bet I’ll be picking myself up a copy.

“Tonight has been like an episode of Game Of Thrones”, said Jake.

“You’ll go home and only remember the boobs and the violence; not the actual story”.

True, Jake. The sexual energy and neon 80s-inspired outfits did stand out, but the music was pretty damn great too.
