Board Announced For New Central Market Authority

Adelaide City Council has appointed four Board Members to the new Adelaide Central Market Authority.

Endorsed last night, David Simmons, Grant Pember, Paul Kerin and Pip Forrester will join Chair Judy Potter in overseeing and developing Market operations (see below for bios).

“We are delighted to announce the inaugural Board, who bring with them a mix of food, retail and market experience as well as property management skills, marketing expertise and corporate insight,” said Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood.

“This is a constructive and opportunistic time for the Market and I congratulate the new Board Members in their commitment to ensuring the successful future of the iconic Central Market.”

The Assessment Panel consisted of the Lord Mayor, Judy Potter and Council Chief Executive Peter Smith, who considered over 50 expressions of interest for the board positions before making the selection.

“It was an exceptional field of candidates and all of us are looking forward to the challenges ahead in ensuring that the Market remains the premier food destination and experience, not only in South Australia but to be recognised internationally,” Judy said.

Announced in February, it will be the first time in history that the Market will be run by a self-governing Board of Directors, who will work independently in the best interest of the Market.

The Board’s role will be to oversee and develop the market in line with the Central Market Charter, which outlines the vision, goals and overall strategic direction of the Market. They will be required to submit a rolling strategic plan and annual business plan to Council for approval as well as provide Performance Reports on an agreed basis.

Traders will also have a role in the model through a Trader Advisory Group and the existing Traders’ Association.

President of the Traders’ Association Franz Knoll said the newly-formed Authority is all about protecting the Market’s “good qualities” while creating more of the same.

“The Adelaide Central Market Authority is a great idea. It will make the Market an even greater people-magnet,” Mr Knoll said.

“For the Market to be a ‘destination’ we have to accommodate people. That means we need to consider the look, feel, car parking, ambience and sustainability. The Authority and the Trades have the chance to make the Market nothing short of magnificent.”

Mr David Simmons has extensive experience in manufacturing and was former Managing Director of Hills Industries and former Chairman of the South Australia Economic Development Board.

Mr Grant Pember has extensive experience in the property industry, including previous appointments with The Property Council of Australia, the Australian Property Institute, former Proprietary Partner and Director of the Mancorp Group and a former Commissioner with the State Development Assessment Commission.

Mr Paul Kerin is the current Chief Executive of the Essential Services Commission of South Australia, Member of the Advisory Board for the University of Adelaide Business School and Adjunct Professor of the University of Adelaide School of Economics.  He is the former Chair of the successful Prahran Markets

Ms Pip Forrestor’s passion lies in food, hospitality and food tourism at both regional and state levels, including former Chair of the McLaren Vale Grape, Wine and Tourism Association Board and General Manager of Chapel Hill Winery Gourmet Retreat. She currently is a member of the Southern Economic Development Board.
