From the author of A Remarkable Woman, A Curious Daughter follows the life of Joy Meredith, who is about to turn 18 and fly the nest to start her adult life during the 1980s. She’d always had an image in her mind about how it would turn out: leave the family farm to go to university, complete her studies to become a vet and start her career, but that’s the funny thing about life — sometimes fate gets in the way of our best laid plans.
This charming story has a bit of everything you want in a good book: the countryside, fashion, travel and love.
While this book is the sequel to A Remarkable Woman, it certainly holds its own as a standalone novel and while I recommend you read the Book One first, you will still be able to follow and enjoy it having not read the first in the series.
The author does a great job of painting a picture of each of the varying landscapes in the book, you can hear nothing but birdsong as you look out over the rolling fields on the family farm and get swept up in the sights and sounds of a busy city when Joy is travelling.
This is a truly heart-warming, coming-of-age tale, as we follow Joy’s journey about following her dreams and listening to her heart.
The characters are well developed and the central players likable and relatable. My only criticism would be that the second part of the book felt a bit rushed. This story spans over a decade and I feel some topics were skipped over but overall, it was a very enjoyable read. This book is well-written, easy to read, and a real page turner. It’s the perfect book to read while on holidays!
