A lot has been published about Elvis Presley over the years, which is not surprising considering he was one of the world’s greatest musical talents of all time. With the release of the new Baz Luhrmann movie Elvis, he has once again been brought into the spotlight and a new generation has been introduced to the brilliance that was Elvis Presley.

People are often left with the memory of Presley in his final years–overweight, sweating, and heavily medicated–believing his abuse of drugs and alcohol caused his untimely death. This book, however, paints a different picture. Finally, we have the missing piece of the puzzle which left the world wondering why Presley died aged just 42. All those questions finally seem like they have been answered, the truth has been told, and justice has been served. Destined to Die Young is making headlines for revealing never-before-heard information which quite possibly puts the mystery to bed surrounding Presley’s death.

Written by Sally A. Hoedel, who has a journalism degree from Michigan State University and is a lifelong Presley fan, this book has combined the author’s personal and professional passions. Hoedel is respectful of Presley when telling his story and it’s evident that a lot of time and care has been taken to gather a lot of research.

The book details Presley’s family tree, his childhood growing up on the wrong side of the tracks in Tupelo, and his rise to fame. Readers learn about his family history and the health problems he’s had all his life. Due to genetic conditions he was born with and conditions he developed as a boy that could not be treated for lack of money, Presley spent all of his life quietly battling illness. But the book highlights how he didn’t let that stand in the way of fulfilling his ambition to become a great musical artist and provide everything he always dreamed of for his family.

This is not an easy read. Packed full of information, the book packs an emotional punch as it delivers the heartbreaking truth behind the King of Rock and Roll’s ultimate fate. Presley deserves his true story to be told and Hoedel has done this while also paying tribute to Presley’s character: a boy from very humble beginnings. Above all, the book conveys that Presley worked hard for every success in life, never forgetting where he came from and always remaining true to himself and the way he was raised. He treated everyone he met equally and with respect. Let’s hope this book helps to preserve this image of Elvis Presley for many generations to come.
