I can’t believe this story has never been told this way before—very enjoyable!

One More Page podcast co-host and picture book author Kate Simpson has teamed up with Australian award-winning illustrator Owen Swan to bring us the wonderful true story of Jessie the elephant, who walked from Moore Park Zoo to her new home at Taronga Zoo, back in September 1916.
Suitable to share with early readers and great for educators, How to Move a Zoo is one of those books that is also perfect for children progressing into independent reading, as the tale is both enticing and unique, providing readers with a strong motivation to keep on going.
Jessie the elephant is unlike any other; she is the only animal being transported alone. Furthermore, she is making her journey through the inner city of Sydney — a concept that, for children in this era, is totally unimaginable, just like a fairy tale. The fact that it is true adds just another layer of intrigue.
With only a few words or a sentence or two on each page, the writing sometimes appears on both pages, and other times only on one side. The text is often integrated into the illustrations, although occasionally placed in the centre of a white background, and there is minimal conversation throughout.
The little dialogue that is included takes the form of an unanswered question rather than an interaction, and the artwork complements the dreamlike feel of the story, with each illustration resembling pencil drawings neatly coloured in, set against softly textured palettes.
The entire book is gentle and inviting, even though the story is spectacular.
