Book Review: I Love a Book, by Joe Rhatigan

Open this book and find a cow in a tree, a gum-chewing shark, singing frogs, an alien bookcase, a dinosaur wearing shoes & tons of reasons to love a book!

A beautifully illustrated children’s book, that has rhyming text. The words are simple but the illustrations are rich and engaging. A small child could spend ages just looking at the pictures.

As you read the text you get a sense of fun, but also the understanding of the breadth of topics found in books. The author has brought to life the joy of reading for the young audience that this picture book is intended for.

The cover, using books to seat a child in an imaginary aeroplane, is a hint at the possible contents of books described within this story’s pages. There is a delightful sense of wonder and fun woven into every page and the idea that reading is an every day treat is brought to the fore in the final pages.

This is a book to be given to every child as they listen to bed time stories and it is one that they will want to read for themselves as soon as they are able. The hardcover format and unusual size allows children to handle the book and investigate the pictures in detail whilst stretched on a bed or floor or even while sitting at a table.

The reverse cover tells you, “Open this book and you will find a cow in a tree, a gum-chewing shark, singing frogs, an alien bookcase, a dinosaur wearing shoes and tons of reasons to love a book!” Joe Rhatigan and illustrators Olga and Aleksey Ivanov have delivered on all of these promises.

I believe this to be an essential purchase for anyone with a child who is 2 to 8 years old.
