Book Review: I’m a Dirty Dinosaur Hide and Seek, by Janeen Brian & Ann James

ACTIVITY BOOK: Everyone’s favourite muddy little dinosaur is back. Pre-schoolers will love to play hide and seek and look for Dirty Dinosaur and friends in this bright, fun lift-the-flap board book.

A simple lift the flap book for the very young child who loves dinosaurs or getting dirty.

Adelaide-based Janeen Brian, a former primary school teacher, is an award-winning author of picture books, fiction, and non-fiction books. She published her 100th book in 2016! Ann James, who lives in Melbourne, was a secondary art teacher before she began illustrating children’s books over 20 years ago.

I’m a Dirty Dinosaur Hide and Seek is the third book in the series, with I’m a Dirty Dinosaur being published in 2013 and I’m a Hungry Dinosaur in 2015.

This time, Dinosaur is looking for his friends. Bird, Bee, Frog, and Fish are all hidden behind very sturdy flaps. Each page has two choices: one flap saying “Not Here!” And the other “It’s …….!”

Contrary to most picture books, all the animals are only drawn in rainbow-coloured outline while the background has the addition of colour. A particularly nice touch to the illustrations is the real-life daisies which have been added to the pictures on the first two pages. Also, the trees and rocks have been painted using real mud from the dam of Ann James. A nice touch! As Dinosaur discovers his friends, they are seen on the next page to help in the hunt. As we move through the book, Dinosaur gets covered with more mud, until the last flap is lifted to reveal a surprise.

Each animal hunt is completed by rhyming words describing what they look like, and how they move.

Where is bird?

Feathery and flittery.

Tweety and twittery.

I’m a Dirty Dinosaur Hide and Seek would also be good in a pre-school setting when learning the “D” sound.

With only five double pages, this simple book is short enough to enable even the most restless child to get to the end of the story. I’m a Dirty Dinosaur Hide and Seek is a well-made, solid lift-the-flap book with rounded corners, perfect for the very young child.
