Book Review: Little Unicorn’s Christmas, by Rhiannon Fielding and Chris Chatterton

PICTURE BOOK: It’s Christmas Eve, and Twinkle the unicorn doesn’t want to go to bed … Can she help save Christmas and still get to bed on time?

A sweet rhyming book with a positive Christmas message.

The Ten Minutes to Bed series was written specifically for bedtime. The collection of stories feature rhyming countdowns and gentle endings, perfect for getting little ones to sleep. There are other lovable characters in the series, like Little Mermaid, Little Monster, and Little Dinosaur, but Little Unicorn seems to be one of the most popular characters, having starred in Little Unicorn (2020), Little Unicorn’s Birthday (2020), and Baby Unicorn (2021). Little Unicorn’s Christmas was first published in 2019 and has been re-released as a board book for the 2021 Christmas season.

This festive-themed instalment combines festive traditions with modern ideas. Twinkle the unicorn has to step up on Christmas Eve when one of the reindeer (guess which one!) can’t complete Santa’s journey around the world. The sweet premise is executed with charming language and musical rhyming, a great aid in getting children to sleep.

Though only a simple rhyming bedtime story, Little Unicorn’s Christmas shows Twinkle, who’s much smaller than Santa’s reindeer, taking on a job that seems impossible. Showing her flourishing at the task despite her small size sends the message that children can achieve anything that they put their minds to—a lesson that could never get old.

The book features cute, colourful illustrations and a detailed map of the Land of Nod inside the cover pages, which help to bring Twinkle’s tale to life. They may also stir a child’s imagination and help to fill their heads with dreams before drifting off to sleep.

It’s no easy feat getting young children to bed on Christmas Eve, so this makes a delightful early Christmas present for toddlers as well as their parents.
