Book Review: Quentin Tarantino – The Iconic Filmmaker and His Work, by Ian Nathan

A detailed biography of iconic film-maker Quentin Tarantino, who went from a video store viewer to lining their shelves with his own cinematic masterpieces.

A visual feast about one of Hollywood’s great rebel filmmakers.
3.5

Ian Nathan is no stranger to the world of cinema. His previous editions have covered off on the works of Tim Burton, The Coen Brothers and Peter Jackson. When it comes to iconic imagery, Quentin Tarantino is up there with this trio as a rebel, a star-maker and a unique storyteller.

In this edition, Nathan not only tells of the journey that took Tarantino from a video store viewer to one of the most recognised auteurs of the medium, but he combines it with stunning stills, intimate images and even explores the way in which Tarantino’s movies have been sold.

For those who don’t know Tarantino, or have only recently discovered his work – most likely via the latest instalment in his repertoire, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – Nathan’s book will provide you with all you need to know, in attentive but not overpowering detail. From the humble beginnings of cinema visits with his mother, to the moment he met the man who would take him to the realisation of his vision, Reservoir Dogs.

From there it is an intense and action-packed roller coaster ride – with highs and lows, star-studded films and, in some cases, career revival opportunities – all of which is outlined in a foldout timeline, which rivals an IMDb search for detailed content.

Each of Tarantino’s cinematic offerings, both the individual and the collaborative, are examined here. It reads like the resume of a videophile – each film inspired by a different genre (American Mobster, Asian Cinema, Horror, War or Western) and the results are nothing short of spectacular.

The edition is a hardback in a slipcase – in the iconic yellow with the katana of The Bride (Uma Thurman’s second contribution to the oeuvre – and a welcome addition to your Tarantino collection.
