Small Habits for a Big Life is a practical step-by-step guide, helping readers to change useless habits which are stopping them living their best life. The book is written by Dr Rebecca Ray, an Australian clinical psychologist, author and speaker. With almost 20 years of experience helping hundreds of people, she is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand and respected experts in the personal growth field.

Ray creates trust with her readers early on, inviting them on a journey of self-reflection. She takes the reader’s hand and leads the way, asking the hard questions with kindness and without self-blame. She also nurtures the reader’s personal achievement through a supportive framework that is backed by scientific research on brain development.

If you are a first-time reader of a self-improvement book like I am, you may be thinking, “If I choose to read this, does this mean I need professional help to get my life together?”

The answer is no: in the demanding and fast-paced society we live in, trying to juggle work and parenting, keeping on top of life admin, and maintaining relationships, we all need a bit of help to get the balance right and make the best use of our time.

I found this book was a great tool to unlock the reasons behind what has been holding me back and look for practical ways I could break these habits one by one so I can live a more productive life. I definitely had some aha! moments and there were parts that made me really challenge myself to get to the root of a habit I want to fix. Ray comes from a very positive and empathetic perspective which has left me feeling good about how far I’ve come and optimistic about further improvement that I can make—not feeling inadequate and like I need to fix myself. We all know that reading a book like this won’t instantly change your life. Ray wants you to be kind to yourself, acknowledging that change can be hard and that there will be days when you have set backs and fall into old habits, but that’s all part of the journey and you simply try again tomorrow.

With just 10 chapters, this book doesn’t overwhelm the reader with information overload, making it feel too hard to actually get started and change anything. It’s broken down into a clear change cycle, with research and real-life examples along the way. At the end of each chapter the reader is then invited to complete an exercise to help work through what they value most in life, what is holding them back from living aligned with their values and why that is, and set some goals towards what they’d like their life to look like. This makes the content easy to understand and follow, and if the lessons are simple, you are more likely to actually put what you’ve learnt into practice.
