Book Review: The Baneseeker Chronicles: Defeat, by S.C. Eston

FANTASY: The young warrior-sorceress Lyna sets her course on Brecon, one of the largest and richest cities of Tilia. But evil seems to follow Lyna wherever she goes, and one of the sinister bane cores looms near Brecon, sowing discord, twisting hearts, claiming lives.

A tale, filled with heart and hurt, that moves the broader story forward in a very different direction: by going backwards.

S.C. Eston – a Canadian-based, self-published author – has released the second volume of his new series: The Baneseeker Chronicles: Defeat.

The elf, Lyna, who was introduced in the preceding work, The Baneseeker Chronicles: Surrender, returns, but not where you’d expect to find her. Eston’s new work takes us back to events that preceded the first book.

Lyna has only just begun her quest to destroy the evil that destroyed her life and happiness. Sensing the presence of evil, she enters the home of Cizarie, a swordsmith, and her two children, but the core she thought she’d found turns out to be false.

As she continues her hunt for the core she knows resides nearby, she encounters it in the hands of a person who will bring about the greatest possible pain: betrayal. The discovery results in a desperate race to find a way to combat the evil, before it destroys another group of innocents.

The Baneseeker Chronicles: Defeat takes the reader back to an earlier aspect of Lyna’s tale, when she is beginning to follow her path of destiny. The work also focuses on other surrounding events, which enhance the background story and set up the future of the chronicles.

This story of the events preceding Surrender shines a light on the darkness that shrouds Lyna, amplifying her loss and drawing a more detailed picture of the young Elven woman. It differs from its predecessor through its emphasis on characters, rather than events or locations, but still provides action aplenty and a climax that promises Lyna’s woes are far from over.

2026 marks 10 years since my introduction to Eston’s writing and it is always a pleasure to support his work.
