Book Review: The Cat Purrsonality Test, by Alison Davies, illustrated by Alissa Levy

HUMOUR: Feline friend or foe? Follow nine puss personality tests to find out!

An adorable gift for a feline fanatic.
4.5

Unlike the animals we devote ourselves to, cat-people are not difficult to please. Write us a book that can decipher the personalities of our furry friends and we will be forever in your debt. Alison Davies’ The Cat Purrsonality Test delivers on its promise to uncover what our felines are really thinking.

The book contains nine distinct quizzes focused on different areas of a cat’s life, from day-to-day habits to playing and sleeping preferences. The results of the quizzes assign your cat an identity for that particular quiz. For example, my cat is a Bare-Faced Beauty when it comes to his grooming habits and (unsurprisingly) The Royal Highness in his communication style.

But each of these results also pertains to the Feline Five Factors: neuroticism, extroversion, dominance, impulsiveness, and agreeableness. At the end of the book, you tally up how many times your cat scored each of the five factors, which then tells you which character traits are the most dominant in your cat overall. I discovered that Nero, bless him, is an agreeable yet neurotic little extrovert.

The book also features some broad information about cats at the beginning of each quiz and then at the end of the book. There’s a small index of cat breeds after the quizzes, followed by a list of sources for those who’d like to do more reading.

The information, which mainly covers the characteristics of cats, is a good refresher. While there are probably no new revelations for passionate cat-owners, it makes for entertaining reading and serves as a good reminder. The writing style is conversational and humorous, never feeling repetitive.

The quirky art style is one of the book’s greatest strengths. Even when your cat doesn’t match the profile, it’s amusing to skim through and read all the results thanks to the illustrations that accompany them. Depicted are cats dressed as assassins, sheriffs, and pioneers, to name a few.

As Davies isn’t a veterinary scientist or animal psychologist, but a passionate cat enthusiast, these purrsonality tests aren’t to be taken as gospel. Rather, they’re a source of fun and laughter. This would make an adorable gift for a cat-parent wanting to know once and for all whether their furball is the Profiteer, the Intellectual, the King of Chill, or all of the above.
