Book Review: This is Me!, by Sally Morgan

BOARD BOOK: A book about self-acceptance that all parents, carers, grandparents and families will love to read to their babies, toddlers, forever children (that have been chosen) and to all children full of personality and sass.

Perfect for reading on a cosy lap, This is Me! spreads a strong message of self worth for young people and their families.

A young girl moves confidently through the landscape. One small, watchful green bird accompanies her wherever she goes. The girl stands strong like the mighty trees and speaks her mind, secure in the knowledge that she is where she’s meant to be. She belongs.

This is Me! is the latest release by Sally Morgan, the acclaimed Australian author, artist and dramatist. Morgan belongs to the Palyku people from the eastern Pilbara region of Western Australia. One of her best-known works, My Place, has sold in excess of half a million copies, and she has published numerous other books for both adults and children. Her artworks feature in many private and public collections locally and internationally.

The pastel palette and line drawings in this sturdy board book are appealing, with images that flow across each spread: fish swim in a shining river, a tree’s branch stretches out to support the young climber, and the shimmering rays of the sun shine upon the girl and her group of friends and family members. The girl dreams big beneath a magical moon.

This is Me! affirms that each of us is deserving of love that’s unconditional and “reinforces to babies and toddlers that they are unique, important and special just the way they are”. Morgan has created a positive message for all parents to share with their babies.

This bright and cheerful board book is full of warmth and hope, and is a lovely read for children being introduced to the joy of reading. If you enjoy This is Me!, look out for Welcome, child!, its companion publication.
