Book Review: Train Party, by Karen Blair

PICUTRE BOOK: All aboard the train party in this rhyming picture book that captures all the fun of a pre-schooler’s train-themed birthday party.

For pre-schoolers, this book is purely for fun. For adults, it's purely fond memories of childhood.

A day out at a miniature train railway park is a fun-tastic way to celebrate your birthday, and Karen Blair captures all the joy and colour of one pre-schooler’s day out.

The rhythmic text mimics the patter of the steam trains as the family explore the park, ride around on trains, and serve up a train-themed birthday cake.

One more train,
but this one’s a snack.
Blow out the candles!
Clickety-clack.

Full of colour and activity, Blair’s joyful illustrations match the snappy, fun words to capture that locomotive energy that makes such a themed party so exciting and trains so popular. There’s movement, sound, friendship, and even the mishap of mum losing her hat.

Blair is an award-winning Western Australian illustrator whose previous books include Something Wonderful and Hello From Nowhere by Raewyn Caisley, With Nan by Tania Cox, Granny Grommet and Me by Dianne Wolfer, and Me and You by Deborah Kelly.

Train Party is a solo effort, with Blair producing both words and pictures. There’s no morals or lessons here. It’s purely for fun and for adults to relive their own special memories of days out with loved ones.
