Australian author and illustrator Yvonne Low has teamed up with Australian-born Kate Talbot to create a colourful and amusing story about the difficulties of hanging your clothes out to dry when the elements are against you.
All seems fine – no clouds, hot and dry – when the clothes are put on the line, but when a sudden gust of wind breaks the pegs and lift the clothes into the sky, havoc ensues — especially when they land in the next door zoo! But when they land on the animals, it becomes a fashion show of sorts, until there are no clothes left and the ones who missed out become jealous. They begin fighting over the clothes, but cool heads reign and the clothes are taken back where they belong.
Written in rhyming text, Windy Washing Day is perfect for children aged two to eight, offering different layers as the children get older. Younger ones will love the animals and their facial expressions as they wear the different clothes. As they get older, there can be discussions around doing jobs, sharing, and helping others.
One of my favourite things to discover in a book is the endpapers and this one does not disappoint. I always feel I am getting a bit extra when there are illustrations which add to the story. The beginning and end of the Windy Washing Day book has animals hiding in brightly coloured foliage — a chance to guess which animal is which. And both end papers are different which is an added bonus.
Kate Talbot’s lovely vibrant illustrations are all created digitally, but the reader would never know as she has been able to make them look like they have been hand drawn.
Windy Washing Day has been printed in hardback, but not too big for a young child to easily hold. With Christmas coming up, this is certainly one to consider for the special little people in your life.
