Boost for Adelaide Health Services With New MRI Licences

The Gillard Government announced five more MRI units in Adelaide have been granted Medicare eligibility making it more accessible for some Adelaide patients.

The units at Radiology SA Memorial Hospital, Benson Radiology North Adelaide, Dr Jones and Partners – St Andrews Hospital, Adelaide Diagnostic Imaging and the Royal Adelaide Hospital Radiology Department have all been granted the new licences Member for Adelaide, Kate Ellis said today.

“These new units will make it easier for people in Adelaide to get accurate and timely diagnosis and treatment,” Ms Ellis said

Medicare rebates at all the locations will be available from 1 November 2012 for scans for rectal and cervical cancer, screening for breast cancer for women under 50 years of age, and six types of scans on children under 16 years of age.

The five units in Adelaide are a group of 161 practices across Australia to be granted partial eligibility.

Together with 30 new locations in regional areas announced in June, it will increase the total number of Medicare-eligible MRI units from 125 in 2011 to 316 from 1 November this year.

The expansion of Medicare-eligible MRI units was part of the Australian Government’s $104.4 million diagnostic imaging reform package announced in May 2011.
