Boutique wine room now open in iconic Lion Hotel

‘The Lion Wine Room’ has opened in Adelaide’s inner suburbs, providing a boutique wine experience for visitors to the iconic Lion Hotel.

A boutique wine room has opened in Adelaide’s inner suburbs, within the walls of an iconic North Adelaide hotel.

A first of its kind, The Lion Wine Room has opened its doors to the public and is situated inside of the Lion Hotel, adjacent to its main bar.

It’s the latest venture in Duxton Pub Fund’s suite of hospitality offerings, and is the brainchild of Brett Matthews, Martin Palmer and Ed Peter.

The Lion Hotel co-owner and hotelier, Brett Matthews says, “We wanted to offer locals a takeaway option, true to the spirit of The Lion.”

“The solution was a tailored wine offering take away, drink on premise and tastings in a beautifully designed, modern but welcoming space.”

“The Lion Wine Room will offer a speciality range of more than 900 local and international wines for purchase and will hold museum and Australian classics, alongside rare Italian and French treats”, says Brett.

This collection has been hand selected by leading South Australian sommelier Trevor Maskell, who was awarded Best Sommelier in SA at the Restaurant and Catering awards in 2003 and 2006.

With two-tiers of pricing, wines can be enjoyed on premise in the court yard, bistro, restaurant or street dining areas and also to take way.

Guests choosing to linger and taste, can also choose to order bites from the hotel’s Hot Mess Kitchen menu.

Much like the offering, the space is contemporary and bespoke – a smorgasbord of soft tonal colours and natural elements, honouring the hotel’s Scandinavian influencer.

An unexpected natural ‘crazy paving’ stone floor and thick iron and glass doors allow for a mellow space for visitors to enjoy a tasting, stay for a drink and leave with a bottle.

They’ll be open from Sunday to Thursday’s from 11am-9pm, and Friday’s and Saturday’s from 11am-10pm.

Find The Lion Wine Room at 161 Melbourne Street, North Adelaide SA.
