Bowden Cellars, known for its dedication to exclusively South Australian wines, has become the owners of Sideways Liquor Co. Bar & Boutique Bottle Shop on Prospect Road. The change of ownership brings a fresh perspective to the popular bottle shop which first opened in 2021.
“We took over Sideways about 10 weeks ago and have completed some exciting renovations including doubling the seating capacity,” co-owner Dale tells Glam Adelaide.
The transition doesn’t stop at wine; Bowden Cellars has introduced a comprehensive wine list, expanding beyond the previous “wine of the month” concept. Spirits, spritzers, and soon-to-be-added cocktails also grace the menu, making Sideways Liquor more than just a typical bottle shop.
“We’re trying to make it a little more of a bar atmosphere rather than just a takeaway option,” Dale says.

Sideways Liquor aimed to champion Australian products with a small bottle shop and bar. Under Bowden Cellars’ management, the focus has evolved into an exclusive celebration of our state’s products.
“We’ve changed the offering to be South Australian only, whereas it was previously Australian only. Wednesday nights, we host free wine tastings with a different wine producer featured each time.”
Bowden Cellars, situated in the vibrant Plant 4 development in Bowden, emerged in 2021 as a light-filled corner where patrons could savour SA wines, spirits, craft beers, and ciders—all crafted by local producers.

“When we opened Bowden Cellars, we ran with the theme of SA only. It comes from our time running the Adelaide Wine Markets, an event business we’ve operated since 2018. We run pop-up tasting events in the city, all focused on local small producers,” Dale says.
“We’ve built strong relationships with these producers, and the idea of running an SA-only themed bottle shop is to showcase the smaller producers you don’t see everywhere.”
The new Sideways Liquor will also offer cheese platters and bar snacks featuring an array of locally sourced SA produce, enhancing the overall tasting experience.
The choice of Prospect as their new location also holds significance for Bowden Cellars.
“The location in Prospect was always on our radar. The opportunity came up, so we jumped at it. Sideways Liquor holds a hotel license, so we would love to expand in the future,” Dale says.
The transformation of Sideways Liquor into a haven for South Australian wine enthusiasts with bring another fun stop to Prospect.
