Brand new escalators coming to Adelaide Central Market

After more than three decades of service to the community, the escalators located in the heart of the Adelaide Central Market will be upgraded.

After more than three decades of service to the community, the escalators located in the heart of the Adelaide Central Market will be upgraded.

The escalator upgrade project will take place over the next three months, with brand-new architecturally designed and energy efficient escalators open and ready for customers in September.

All shoppers will be required to use the Gouger Street or Grote Street lifts, or the stairs, to access the Market during this time. Way-finding will be installed throughout the Market carpark to guide people to the Market floor.

The Market will provide additional customer service officers at key trading times to support the customer experience during the upgrade.

Adelaide Central Market Authority (ACMA) General Manager Jodie Kannane said the Adelaide Central Market was committed to providing the very best amenities for its loyal customers.

“Our existing escalators have served the Market incredibly well for more than three decades,” Ms Kannane said. “While small works have been undertaken over the years to maintain them, it’s now time to replace this essential piece of infrastructure for the benefit of future generations.

“We are thrilled to be taking our Market to the next level with all-new escalators and connected seating area and providing a safer and reliable mode of transport for customers for many years to come.

“We thank our Market community and the broader public for their patience while we complete this important upgrade project. We continue to encourage people to shop local and support our Market traders.”

The Market escalator refurbishment is one of several essential infrastructure upgrades undertaken by ACMA in recent times. It comes after a complete refresh of the Gouger Street glass lift last year, followed by the installation of an all-new energy efficient lift on Grote Street, which recently re-opened to the public.

A new Market customer service desk at Stall R17 is set to open in mid-June. More details will be available soon.

The Adelaide Central Market escalators will be closed for renovation from the end of trade on 22 May and will reopen to customers in September 2021. Members of the public can view the project details, including images of the new escalators, at the main escalator site on Level G, 1 and 2, and at key location stations.

With over 70 traders under one roof, the Adelaide Central Market is one of the largest undercover fresh produce markets in the southern hemisphere. Visit: adelaidecentralmarket.com.au
