In September of 2024, business for Bray St Coffee Roasters came to an abrupt halt when a vicious firebombing attack hit the cafe. Now, after a huge amount of blood, sweat, tears, and passion, Bray St is up and running again.
On Friday afternoon, Bray St Coffee Roasters was approved to once again open its doors. The building has been restored to its former glory, and owner Dan Horrell says, “it’s all finished, and we’re ready to move back in.”
Things will take some time to get back to where they were before last year’s devastating fire, and Dan says “it’s going to look rough to start, but I just want to get back in there. The main thing is we’re back!”

Bright coats of paint are getting their last refresh, and as all equipment moves back in, art will start to go back on the walls and decor around the cafe.
Although it’ll start with a bare bones setup, Dan expects things to move quickly. Right now the coffee machine is sitting on a portable table made from pallets that the team used while serving coffee from out the front.

Bray St Coffee Roasters had become a shining gem in the area, with Dan’s cafe gaining plenty of respect from locals and Bray Street businesses alike. After the fire, the street rallied around Bray St Coffee to get it back in business until everything could move back into the building.
Dan is on the lookout for some new cafe furniture, after the majority perished in the fire, so if you’ve got anything in good condition that you’re happy to give away, make sure you get in touch.

Dan has put a great deal of hard work and dedication into his coffee shop since opening in 2016, but especially to get it back on its feet. Between the months of September and March, he’s been out in the sizzling summer heat pouring coffees from the sidewalk and keeping the Plympton Park community spirit alive.
“At the start using the generator was very expensive,” Dan said, “But Tara on the corner (Hair with Flair Boutique) came to the rescue and said ‘come down and use our power.'”
“There’s been great support on the footpath, and great support from the community while we’ve been closed,” Dan said.

Dan couldn’t be happier to have the community’s support and to be finally moving back into the building. “It was a half hour setup and half hour pack down every day while we were outside,” Dan said.
It’s been a tough five months for Dan but he says, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
Get on down to Bray St Coffee Roasters to show your support and grab a top-notch coffee while you’re at it.
