The deployment of four innovative artificial intelligence cameras is set to improve road safety and ease traffic congestion in Adelaide’s busiest suburbs. This technology, a first for South Australia, has been installed at strategic points in Penfield, Paradise, and Old Noarlunga.
Engineered by SAFEgroup Automation, these intelligent systems are tailored to improve traffic flow and strengthen road safety during peak traffic periods. By linking these cameras to the Department for Infrastructure and Transport’s Traffic Management Centre (TMC), real-time vehicle movements are monitored. The system facilitates an automatic adjustment of traffic lights to tackle congestion issues.
Tom Koutsantonis, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, commended on this initiative by the SA Government, saying “We are embracing the latest technology to deliver a safer, more reliable road network.”
He emphasised the frustration that arises from being stuck in severe traffic congestion and highlighted the government’s proactive measures through these trials to improve the situation as they continue to develop Adelaide’s northern areas.
TMC figures suggest that a delay of twenty minutes for every five thousand motorists in morning traffic costs the economy over $33,000. The initial installation in the northern suburb of Heaslip Road has demonstrated a clear reduction in traffic build-up and the frequency of rear-end collisions, which were a common occurrence.
Assistant Minister for Artificial Intelligence and the Digital Economy, Michael Brown, said, “This is a great initiative that shows how AI can significantly enhance our road network and increase driver safety.”
The cameras’ ability to identify and adapt to fluctuating traffic volumes allows for a smoother flow of traffic, preventing the potential for accidents.
These cameras automate traffic light functions to address high traffic volumes effectively and are connected to the TMC where the system can be manually monitored and adjusted if necessary, ensuring continuous oversight and safety.
Observations since the technology’s installation indicate a substantial improvement in traffic management. At the Heaslip Road roundabout, a temporary system stops northbound traffic to facilitate smooth entries from the exit ramp, significantly reducing the likelihood of queuing and subsequent rear-end collisions.
Anticipated residential developments in Smithfield and Playford will introduce close to 3,000 homes, which could potentially exacerbate traffic congestion. With the AI system already in operation along the Northern Expressway, the infrastructural groundwork is being laid to accommodate increased traffic demands.
The plan to expand these intelligent traffic systems includes installing additional cameras at two more points along the Northern Expressway. The integration of advanced AI technology not only aims to refine traffic management strategies but also systematically prepares for future housing expansions and their implications on traffic flow.
