Premier Peter Malinauskas has announced the new South Australian Cabinet – a fresh, united team which will deliver Labor’s plan for the future of South Australia.
The new Cabinet continues many of the personnel and portfolios from the Labor Opposition, while also injecting fresh talent and adding an independent MP to the Cabinet room.
Deputy Premier Susan Close adds Industry, Innovation & Science as well as Defence & Space Industries to her ministerial responsibilities, after being sworn in as Minister for Climate, Environment & Water on Monday.
Kyam Maher is the state’s new Attorney-General and will be the first initiated Aboriginal person to hold the position of Minister for Aboriginal Affairs. He will also be Minister for Industrial Relations & Public Sector.
The state’s longest-serving MP Tom Koutsantonis will be the new Minister for Infrastructure & Transport as well as Minister for Energy & Mining. He will also be the Leader of Government Business in the House of Assembly.
Blair Boyer will be charged with delivering Labor’s comprehensive plan for Education, Training and Skills. Stephen Mullighan was sworn in as Treasurer on Monday and as announced this week, Chris Picton will be the new Minister for Health & Wellbeing.
Katrine Hildyard will retain her portfolios of Child Protection, Women & the Prevention of Domestic & Family Violence and Recreation, Sport and Racing. Nat Cook will be the new Minister for Human Services.
South-East based MLC Clare Scriven will be Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development and Minister for Forest Industries. Andrea Michaels will keep Small & Family Business and Consumer & Business Affairs while also adding Arts to her responsibilities.
Joe Szakacs and Nick Champion will join the frontbench. Minister Szakacs will be responsible for Police, Emergency Services & Correctional Services while Minister Champion will hold the portfolios of Trade and Investment, Housing & Urban Development and Planning.
In addition to the Labor members elected to Cabinet at last night’s Caucus meeting, the Labor team have asked Independent MP Geoff Brock to join the Cabinet.
Minister Brock will hold the portfolios of Regional Roads, Local Government and Veterans Affairs, reflecting his strong connection to regional South Australia and previous ministerial experience.
Labor hit the ground running in the regions yesterday, with Premier Malinauskas travelling to the South-East within 72 hours of being sworn in.
Emily Bourke will be Assistant Minister to the Premier and Rhiannon Pearce will be Assistant Minister to the Deputy Premier.
In total, 8 of the 17 people on the frontbench will be female – a record level of female representation at the top of government.
