The upgrade of the Brighton Road and Edwards Street junction in South Brighton has been completed, bringing a number of improvements to road safety and public transport in Adelaide’s southwest.

New traffic lights have been installed, along with a signalised pedestrian crossing and a cyclist crossing to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.

A dedicated right-turn lane has been added on Edwards Street for vehicles heading into the Brighton Central Shopping Centre to help smooth traffic flow, especially during peak hours.

For public transport users, a new bus stop (37 east) has been installed just south of the junction. The project also includes upgraded LED lighting, new kerbing and gutters, resurfaced road pavement, and refreshed line-marking.

The push button crossing on Brighton Road, south of Gregory Street, has been kept following community feedback and has been synchronised with the new junction to better manage traffic flow.

The upgrades are expected to reduce congestion at this busy intersection and the surrounding area, helping to alleviate traffic frustrations for residents and local businesses.

This project was a collaborative effort, funded jointly both the Federal and State Governments. The $30 million investment ($15 million from each government) also supported around 20 jobs during the construction phase.

“The Brighton Road and Edwards Street junction has been a source of frustration for local residents for a long time,” Infrastructure and Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said.

“With this upgrade, we have delivered improved accessibility, improved safety and decreased congestion – not only across the intersection, but also in the surrounding area.

“We thank local residents and businesses for their patience while these works were undertaken.”
