The intersection of Brighton Road, Ocean Boulevard, and Scholefield Road in South Australia will receive new traffic signals as part of a $30 million safety improvement initiative. The project aims to address the current challenges faced by road users, pedestrians, and cyclists in accessing the arterial road network, which is vital for the communities of Seacliff, Kingston Park, and Marino.
Announced by Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Hon. Catherine King MP, and SA Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Hon. Tom Koutsantonis MP, the project includes $15 million funding each from the Australian and South Australian governments.
Minister King spoke about the value of the project, stating, “Funding the intersection upgrade is an important investment in making sure people can get to where they want to go and home again safely.” She continued, “We have listened to the local community, particularly the messages from Louise Miller-Frost and Alex Dighton about the need for these traffic signals.”
Minister Tom Koutsantonis said “The intersection of Scholefield Road and Ocean Boulevard is the primary access point onto the arterial road network for the Kingston Park and Marino community.”
“We know this intersection is already causing access issues due to traffic volumes and the Villawood and Seacliff developments currently underway will only add to that, particularly during peak hours.”
Additional remarks from Federal Member for Boothby, Louise Miller-Frost, and Member for Black, Alex Dighton, underscored the community’s feedback and its pivotal role in prompting these governmental actions. Miller-Frost emphasised the impact of the intersections upgrade on reducing congestion and enhancing safety. Dighton shared his constituents’ concerns over access difficulties exacerbated by the daily traffic volume, which he noted reaches about 30,000 vehicles at Ocean Boulevard.
The planned installation of traffic signals will not only regulate vehicle flow but also significantly improve pedestrian and cyclist access across Brighton Road and Ocean Boulevard. This move is expected to bring a reliable level of service and enhance safety measures in line with growing traffic demands and regional development.
Regarding project timelines, design development is scheduled to continue throughout 2025. The construction phase is poised to commence in mid-2026, with an anticipated completion between late 2026 and early 2027.
Such infrastructural enhancements are critical in areas experiencing significant residential and commercial development, ensuring that growth is managed effectively and safely.
