Bring On The Bay To Birdwood This Sunday

The Bay To Birdwood hits Adelaide this weekend and with the event in its 35th year, it is set to be a special day full of family fun and beautiful cars

Now in its 35th year the Bay to Birdwood has grown to become the largest historic motoring celebration of its kind in the world today. Taking place on Sunday 27 September, this year’s event is for vehicles manufactured from 1 January 1956 through to 31 December 1978.

The Bay to Birdwood will this year be at capacity with 1750 classic vehicles registered to participate. This year’s Bay to Birdwood Classic also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the National Motor Museum and milestones for classic cars including the MGA, Sunbeam, Simca, Goggomobil and XP Falcon.

The morning will begin at 6am at Adelaide Shores, Barratt Reserve, West Beach where around 4000 people will enjoy breakfast amongst the vehicles. At 8:30am legendary flag waver Glen Dix will then signal off each vehicle to drive the 70km route.

Mal Hyde, Chairman of the Bay to Birdwood is encouraging the community to line the streets and bring their deck chairs and picnic baskets to watch the cavalcade of motoring history make its way through the suburbs to the glorious Adelaide Hills.

“It has been the loyal support of historic vehicle owners, admirers, spectators and local communities that has sustained this great South Australian event over the years and on behalf of the Bay to Birdwood Committee, we thank and encourage everyone to continue on with their valued support,” said Mal Hyde, Chairman, Bay to Birdwood Committee.

This year’s route returns to North East Road and turns right into Grand Junction Road, heading up through Houghton, Inglewood and Gumeracha, finishing at the National Motor Museum in Birdwood. From 10am – 5pm around 10,000 people will wander amongst the vehicles, enjoy the fashion, food, entertainment and children’s activities.

Visitors to the Museum will also be able to see the collection of 300+ vintage, veteran and classic cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles. Entertainment on stage will be Buddies 4, Royal Australian Navy Band, South Australia and Paul Fenech with Elvis Alive.

Entrants and the general public are encouraged to dress up in their best outfit of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s for a chance of being chosen for the Fashions in the Field parade. Over 60 entries have been received for the highly-coveted Concours d’Elegance which will see entrants going to great lengths to impress the judges with their vehicle, personal attire and the overall presentation.
