Brown Charlie Co. Is Your New Coffee Injection On Currie St

Come Monday, Currie Street will welcome the new Brown Charlie Co. coffee crew, and they’re launching with FREE COFFEE all day!

As Waymouth St has raced ahead to become one of Adelaide’s best food and coffee strips, with the changing face of Hindley St not far behind, it’s been interesting to watch how Currie St has slowly started to reinvent itself as well. While the King William Road end has seen a growth in foot traffic, in no short part down to the Leigh and Peel Street developments, look beyond Leigh St on the northern side and there is virtually nothing on offer during the day, except for that very peculiar dating business downstairs off the footpath which looks like the logical progression to thousands of failed attempts on Tinder.

Come Monday though, that is set to change. And it will be toasted with the smell of freshly brewed coffee.

72 Currie St is the home of new Adelaide cafe Brown Charlie Co., with owner Charlie Chau the first to take the plunge to break up barren run of empty ground level shopfronts in the area. This pocket of caffeine goodness is tucked into the front of a currently vacant office space, with the foyer to provide a snug haven for drinkers keen to escape the busy streets. Inside, you’ll be met by an immersive mural from Toy Soldiers crew member and Adelaide graffiti icon Fredrock, who has gone to town in an array of colour to bring life to the limited space.

Chau is sticking to a simple philosophy for the space of quality coffee, raw and healthy snacks and boutique sodas. Why overthink it when there’s so much already going on in Adelaide. With delectable cakes and nut bars from Raw Food Society, and being one of the only stockists of Boylan cane sugar sodas, as well as the range of Bai antioxidant drinks, it’s not going to be difficult to sort out that morning or afternoon grumble in your stomach.

A cafe seems like the logical first step on this strip, an anchor if you will, and it if you peer behind the curtain to the space behind the cafe, you’ll soon see the potential of the building and the strip in general to continue the expansion of Adelaide’s creative and artisan trading community.
