Building begins to take shape at new $135m Adelaide Aquatic Centre

The building has begun to take shape at the new aquatic centre, as work begins on the structure of three exciting features.

The first three pool-shaped slabs have been laid at the heart of the all new Adelaide Aquatic Centre, as approved designs go ahead for the 50-metre indoor pool, the Warm Water/Rehabilitation indoor pool and the Learn to Swim indoor pool.

Work on the remaining pools, including the indoor splash zone, outdoor lagoon and 25-metre pool have commenced and will continue through 2025. The centre will also contain a gym and fitness centre, in addition to a relaxation zone – likely a sauna and steam room – and improved change rooms.

Premier Peter Malinauskus commented on the development, saying: “This facility is going to be a huge step forward for water recreation in Adelaide, and every construction milestone is a step closer to the centre opening in Summer 2025- 26.”

With 10 lanes, the 50-metre indoor pool will offer state-of-the-art training facilities for up-and-coming athletes, as well as providing an accomodating location for swimming carnivals, water sports, and recreational use.

The temperature-controlled Warm Water/Rehabilitation pool, in comparison, has been designed with aquatic therapy, gentle exercise, rehabilitation and quiet relaxation in mind, and will be heated to 32-34 degrees all year-round.

Labor have pledged to powering the new centre with 100% renewable and utilising locally-sourced, low-carbon emission materials during construction wherever possible. As part of the renovation, the centre will feature indoor and outdoor pools, water slides, splash zones, and lawned recreational facilities.

Demolition of the former Adelaide Aquatic Centre continues, with the former pools currently being backfilled with soil excavated from the new pool site. As part of this process, over 1000 square metres of land will be returned to Park Lands once the new centre is completed.

Member for Adelaide, Lucy Hood, recently toured the old centre, where the old pools are currently being filled in to make way for additional Park Lands. She says: “That’s why this project is a win-win, because it delivers improved community services and more Park Lands.”

As construction continues, over 100 swim group and over 2000 swim students are looking to other aquatic centres around Adelaide for the time being, such as the recently refurbished Thebarton Aquatic Centre. More than 1500 job are being supported during the span of this project.

The $135m aquatic hub is expected to officially open in the summer of 2025/2026.
