Bundaberg Bullet Returns to Adelaide with Astana

Former winner and the only rider to have competed in every edition of the Santos Tour Down Under, Allan Davis, is the latest big name to confirm his participation for the race in January 2011.

“We are thrilled that Alby is returning to Adelaide to compete in the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under with his team Astana,” says Race Director, Mike Turtur.

The 30-year old Queenslander, who is also known as Bundaberg Bullet, has a strong track record at the race. He won the Santos Tour Down Under in 2009, and prior to that, he has had six stage wins and finished second overall at the event in 2005 and 2008.

“Alby is a great sprinter and has had a stellar season in 2010. The 2011 Santos Tour Down Under will give him a great opportunity to prove himself against the world’s best at the start of the season,” says Mike Turtur.

“His participation is an added boost to the quality of the race. With so many of the world’s best sprinters including Mark Cavendish, Tyler Farrar and André Greipel lining up to race here in 2011, it will be a gruelling competition ahead.”

Davis had an excellent 2010 season, winning bronze at the 2010 World Championships in Geelong, followed by a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in the Men’s Road Race.

Davis will be joined in Adelaide by fellow Aussie Simon Clarke, who makes his UCI WorldTour debut in 2011 with Astana.

The Astana team for the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under will be led by Team Manager Guido Bontempi (ITA) and include the following riders:

Allan Davis (AUS) Simon Clarke (AUS) Maxim Gourov (KAZ) Valentin Iglinskiy (KAZ)

Yevgeniy Nepomnyachshiy (KAZ) Andriy Grivko (UKR) Tanel Kangert (EST)

The 2011 Santos Tour Down Under will be held in Adelaide and regional South Australia from 16-23 January 2011. For further information visit www.tourdownunder.com.au
