Burn professionals from across Australia will deliver educational seminars on burn injuries at the two-day forum.

Participants will receive information advice and resources about the emotional, social and psychological impact of burn injuries and support from burn professionals and other burn survivors.

As ambassador of the Julian Burton Burns Trust in South Australia, Ms Mayer will join other burn survivors from across the country in Adelaide for the inaugural Adult Burn Survivor Education and Support Forum on July 26 and 27.

After suffering life threatening burn injuries, Ms Mayer is now inspiring others to face their fears and to feel comfortable in their own skin.

“Suffering a burn injury is one of the most painful experiences anyone could endure,” she said.

“In addition to the physical trauma, feelings of loneliness, isolation, loss and grief are some of the psychological effects often associated with burn injuries.

“My experience has taught me about mental strength. I believe in positive thinking and never giving up – can’t is not a word in my vocabulary.”

Ms Mayer sustained partial and full thickness burns to 85% of her body in a house fire in Cairns in February 2000.

She spent nine months in the burns unit of the Royal Brisbane Hospital, underwent lengthy rehabilitation and had over 100 operations.

Julian Burton Burns Trust General Manager Ms Deb Bates said Carol was an inspirational leader and role model to many.

“Carol has a can-do attitude and fighting spirit,” Ms Bates said.

“The Julian Burton Burns Trust is delighted to have Carol on board as an Ambassador.

“The Burn Survivor Forum aims to not only offer, educational information, but also a support network for those impacted by their burn injuries,” Ms Bates said.

“By uniting burn survivors, we hope they can face their fears, share their stories and be a long term support for each other.”
