The State Government has announced that the State Planning Commission will assess the redevelopment of Burnside Hospital. This $60 million health precinct project is expected to improve the public health system greatly by treating over 140,000 patients a year.

The State Planning Commission will play a key role in maintaining a careful and transparent assessment process for this redevelopment.

The planned redevelopment of Burnside Hospital includes a comprehensive cancer care facility. It will integrate diagnostic services, therapeutic treatments, surgeries, and consultations all under one roof. This consolidation is expected to streamline patient care by reducing the need for multiple visits to different locations for various treatment aspects. The facility will also have two new operating theatres and a procedure room, accommodating approximately 3,500 additional day surgeries per year.

The new health precinct will also have a state-of-the-art radiology service and a modern fertility clinic, and a laboratory.

From the project, the Eastern Suburbs will see approximately 200 jobs supported during the construction phase, with over 70 ongoing healthcare and support roles becoming available once the facility is operational.

The redevelopment’s strategic assessment by the State Planning Commission will include a range of key planning considerations. Issues such as infrastructure demands, traffic management, and heritage preservation will be thoroughly evaluated. This comprehensive approach makes sure all planning and community needs are balanced against technical requirements and long-term objectives.

Minister for Health and Wellbeing Chris Picton shared, “Any expansion of health services is good news for the South Australian community.”

Minister for Housing and Urban Development Nick Champion also said, “Given the scale and complexity of this proposal, I have determined that the State Planning Commission is best placed to provide an independent and transparent assessment process.

“The community can have confidence that all planning considerations will be thoroughly examined.

“Major developments like this require a careful balance of community needs, technical requirements, and long-term planning objectives.”

The redevelopment plan is a critical part of the state’s continued efforts to improve healthcare facilities. Through the ongoing efforts of the State Planning Commission and cooperation between public and private sectors, South Australia is paving the way for a more robust health system.
