Christmas has come early for a Burra local, who is still reeling after discovering he’s the sole winner of a jaw-dropping $50 million Oz Lotto jackpot. Yesterday, the search was on for the $50 million winner, but a chance ticket check has found the mystery man.
The South Australian man, who wishes to remain anonymous, stumbled upon his life-changing fortune during a casual ticket check, much to the delight of lottery officials who had been eagerly waiting for him to come forward.
The massive win was the only division one entry nationally in Oz Lotto draw 1608, drawn Tuesday, December 10, 2024. When the reality hit, his reaction was nothing short of explosive, “It’s f***ed! I can’t believe it,” he said. “I didn’t even know the jackpot had been won! I just came in to check my ticket.”
The ecstatic winner admitted he’s unsure of what’s next, but one thing’s certain: his working days are officially behind him. “This does absolutely everything for me,” he said. “I’ll treat myself and help my family. I don’t think I’ll work again. My workdays are done!”
The golden ticket was sold at Burra Terry White Chemmart Pharmacy, marking a first for the store. Retail manager Kelly Bray was equally thrilled. “Oh my god! I can’t stop shaking, and I didn’t even win!” she said. “It’s such big news for our pharmacy and for Burra. I’m so stoked for our winner and wish him all the very best.”
This jackpot marks the second-largest lottery win in South Australia for 2024, following an Adelaide man’s record-breaking $150 million Powerball haul in May. Across Australia, Oz Lotto draw 1608 also delivered over 719,000 prizes in divisions two to seven, totaling more than $67 million. Ten division two winners each pocketed $62,689.10.
The winning numbers for draw 1608 were 1, 29, 20, 23, 34, 46, and 39, with supplementary numbers 42, 43, and 24. This win brings The Lott’s division one tally for 2024 to 418, including 29 in South Australia alone. With $323 million awarded across 16 Oz Lotto division one wins this year, it’s been a big year for life-altering jackpots.
For the Burra winner, though, it’s all about savouring the moment. As he said himself: “Oh my god, $50,000 would’ve been nice, but $50 million? It’s unbelievable!”
