Business icon Karl Chehade, Founder of Karl Chehade Dry Cleaning, passes away at 91

The Chehade family is deeply saddened to announce the peaceful passing of Karl Chehade, Founder of Karl Chehade Dry Cleaning, at the age of 91.

A visionary figure in the Australian community, Karl migrated to Australia in 1951 at the age of 17. He began his journey in Sydney before settling in Adelaide, where he built a remarkable life despite speaking no English and having no formal education.

Karl mastered metalwork and welding at Horwood Bagshaw and later explored various ventures, including the fruit and vegetable industry and opening a restaurant called Mignon on Pulteney Street. In the mid-1950s, he and his late brother, Amin, founded Chehade Brothers Menswear, which expanded into tailoring, suit hire, and dry cleaning, earning a strong reputation in the clothing industry.

As their families grew, Karl and his wife, Delele, established Karl Chehade Dry Cleaning, which became Australia’s largest and most environmentally friendly dry-cleaning chain.

In retirement, Karl ventured into the olive industry, producing award-winning extra virgin olive oil and table olives until around 2015. A devoted family man, he cherished his Maronite heritage and prioritised his children’s education, leading them to successful careers.

Karl was also instrumental in founding the Adelaide Maronite Community Church and was recognised by the United Lebanese Community Movement for strengthening ties between the Lebanese and Australian communities.

He will be remembered for his resilience, vision, and lasting impact on those around him. His legacy continues through his beloved family.

In honour of his contributions, all Karl Chehade Dry Cleaning South Australian stores will close on Friday October 4th from 1pm to 4pm during the funeral service, allowing time to reflect on and celebrate Karl’s extraordinary life.
