Cabaret Festival Review: Bridget Everett Pounds It, Grinds It, Nails It.

If there was ever a performer who should come with her own Advisory Warning, then Bridget Everett would win hands down.

If there was ever a performer who should come with her own Advisory Warning, then Bridget Everett would win hands down.

Looking resplendent in flowing sequins with a matching wine bottle in a brown paper bag, Everett was her typically classy self as she smashed the opening night of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. If you’ve never seen her or her act then imagine the wit of Joan Rivers, the modesty of a porn star, and why not throw in the subtlety of a tornado while we’re at it! Her opening number ‘Let’s F@*k Some Shit Up’ sums up her show perfectly. She’s inappropriate, crass, shameless, and fearless all in one- I think I’m in love with her!

Her self deprecating humour is hilarious, with her claim that “people actually look at me and say ‘There’s a woman that really has her shit together'”, whilst scratching her privates and swigging wine from the bottle sums up perfectly her ability to laugh at herself. Supported by a tight, well oiled band, her show weaves through stories from her life interlaced with songs, which she delivers in an incredibly powerful voice. Pausing monetarily to attempt a serious tone, she quickly drops back into her R-Rated persona, making for some huge belly laughs in the process. She has the ability to draw her audience in, make you feel at ease, and then rub her boobs in your face just for the hell of it. Did I mention she was inappropriate earlier?

Everett brings audience participation to a new level, with unsuspecting guests unwittingly ending up as part of the show. In her own words- she ‘may not be playing Madison Square Garden tonight, but she will sit on someones  face.’ She followed through!

Definitely one for the grown ups with a sound sense of humour and an open mind, but don’t expect any modicum of political correctness at her show. Bridget Everett doesn’t give a f#@k, and she’s fabulous!

Be quick though- she’s only here for one more night so don’t miss her.
