Cabaret Festival Review: The Sammy J Songbook

The ever-funny, ever-popular Sammy J performs some of his greatest laugh-out-loud hits at this year’s Cabaret Festival.

Sammy J has graduated from appearing at the Adelaide Fringe, almost constantly, to the Adelaide Cabaret Festival – and it’s about time!!

The star of Sammy J and Randy in Ricketts Lane and Sammy J’s Playground Politics (now playing on iView) has been performing for a number of years now (and not always with his little purple mate, Randy), and so has many, many ditties under his belt – all of them hilarious. The Sammy J Songbook showcases just a few, and it doesn’t matter if you’ve heard them before, they are just as funny, even more so when you know what is coming.

Sammy is incredibly likable and has a wonderful gift for the ‘gab’ (he was studying originally to be a lawyer after all). He has a tremendous ability to turn the real into the absurd and, perhaps more importantly, the absurd into the real. He is a brilliant wordsmith!

Without giving too much away, Sammy J tackles subjects such as sport, love, how cool it is to be a nerd, the potential danger of performing a cabaret act (especially if there is a female Ninja in the audience) and crutch sweat pads (Don’t ask). And if that’s not enough – he sings backwards as well.

This is a show NOT to be missed by Sammy J fans and the perfect introduction to a great Aussie comedian/songwriter for those who are not familiar with the man.

Stop reading this and go and enjoy Sammy J’s great outlook on life!
