Cabaret Festival Review: The Tap Pack

The show began with a busker, who had been performing in the foyer, coming in and starting to perform with his beat box on the stage to the confusion of most of the audience. The crowd were appreciative of his performance, especially when he changed to tap shoes, and laughed when he was removed by two of the cast.

Having introduced themselves the boys moved on to some of their routines. With a couple of good singers, they were able to cover many different styles. They mimicked some of the greats, Sammy Davis Jnr, Sinatra, Astaire and even Ginger!

With the addition of the “Busker”,  these are five guys who work well together. Whilst their dance routines were slick and spectacular, these boys can dance and keep a beat with any object that will make a noise. The moveable pieces of stage, which could be a bar, or several platform stages served their purpose very well and gave the show visual variety.

A tight six-piece ensemble of musicians who are completely at home with the jazz/swing feel backs them. They pulled a few unsuspecting audience members up to join them at times and we were lucky enough to score some who could dance well. The cheesy comedy worked well and got many laughs, but the show didn’t flow as well as it should due to a few missed cues by the technical crew. Although this was minor it did take to shine off the performance at times. This is advertised as a tap show, but it has an appeal for a wider audience.
