Tim Motley has performed in 28 countries around the world. In 2 Ruby Knockers, 1 Jaded Dick, he performs as Detective Dirk Darrow on the hunt for a murderer. Set in the 1940s and inspired by the works of Dashiell Hammett, the show is set in the dark of night.
Characteristically attired in fedora hat and trenchcoat, Detective Darrow comes to the stage. He starts his story cigarette in hand, quickly reveals he has a weakness for beautiful women and is completely jaded by life. An archetype detective of the time.
His voice, tone and pitch create a relaxed atmosphere for you to enjoy the embedded literary humour of the story, however there is no room for passivity. Although you are acutely aware you are a watching a crime investigation and hearing a story, his show does require audience participation. One or two of the audience members become active participants. He intuits well though, so there is no need to be worried.
When you first arrive in the theatre, you will find you need to fill out a card on your seat. These cards have different instructions for each audience member. Later in the performance, the reasons for these cards are revealed. As a type of interlude from the main story, is a truly amazing side act to keep you engaged. This trick will leave you in awe of his ability to glean clues about audience members. Just like a real detective!
It certainly enhances the experience and gives him depth of character. In fact, his secondary acts showcase his many talents – magic tricks, mind-reading, and spontaneous wit. They will keep you entertained for the entire show regardless of what you thought you came to watch.
This is worth the night out.
