Dr H is an all-round performer who creates the type of atmosphere that gets everyone involved. The last time I saw him perform was a couple of years ago with his show If I Were Elton – Trippin’ with the Rocket Man, and although I enjoyed that very much, this show felt more casual and cozy.
With his infectious energy onstage and unpretentious vibe, even the worst of us singers found ourselves letting go and joining in. You really can’t help but enjoy yourself as he keeps it real and welcoming. As he talked about the history of Queen and Freddie Mercury, we sang along expressively to the likes of Bohemian Rhapsody, I Want to Break Free, and Somebody to Love.
Changes in tempo came with Another One Bites the Dust and Radio Ga Ga, where the audience became part of the show with toe-tapping or hand claps. We are the Champions, and I Want to Break Free were also sung, and he actually opened the show with their lesser known, but very first song Keep Yourself Alive. I found the variety of tempos and moods kept the entire evening fun, unpredictable, and appealing.
The occasional snippets of the Queen story – such as when the band formed, when Freddie Mercury went solo, a bit about bass player and songwriter John Deacon, or about the surviving members’ (Brian May and Roger Taylor) final “Queen” tours – made the show not only informative but also real and personal. I’m not sure he hit every high note perfectly (which may irk the singers), but entertainment also counts here; not to mention his musical skills are outstanding.
Ginger’s Vintage Lounge Bar is a brilliant spot for this type of show, with its retro, welcoming feel and lovely staff. Despite the space being without an actual “stage” as such, the acoustics were surprisingly good. Queen – A Night at the Cabaret Opera is a perfect blend of nostalgia, storytelling, musical talent and most of all, fun!
