As the whirlwind of South Australia’s event-packed March fades, the crisp bite of autumn settles in. The nights grow cooler, the days a little shorter, and the call for a cosy escape becomes impossible to ignore.

Now that it’s getting cooler, Kangaroo Island’s pristine shores take on a new kind of magic. With fewer crowds and nature in full song, the off-season might just be the perfect time to visit.

And when the night air settles in, there’s one spot that’s turning up the heat.

Kingscote café Cactus Kangaroo Island is embracing the off-season, adding a fiery new twist to its morning and afternoon offerings with an evening pop-up serving bold Asian flavours.

Starting last weekend, the café launched its Cactus Evening Pop-Up Restaurant, which will run all the way through the winter months. Every Friday and Saturday, Cactus is open for dinner from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

Think fragrant curries and smoky stir-fries that, as owner Yen Leow puts it, “are wafting all the way down the street.”

“When we opened last Friday, you could see people parking their cars, opening their doors and looking over because they could smell the amazing aromas,” Leow continued.

What’s on the menu? The Chee Choo prawn curry has quickly become a crowd favourite, while the signature Cactus pot sticker dumplings—served with house-made chilli oil and black vinegar—flew off the plates. The slow-cooked beef rendang delivers rich, authentic spice, and the wok-fired Pad Kra Pow packs a punch with Thai basil, chilli, and sizzling minced chicken. To finish, get yourself a plate of indulgent banana fritters, drizzled with spiced maple syrup and paired with vanilla ice cream.

But there’s something stirring behind the bar. The restaurant is crafting a lineup of playful, sweet, sour, and spicy cocktails, ready to shake up Kingscote’s night scene. On offer is the whiskey-based Asian Punch, with Thai tea, coconut, pandan, and lemon. Or, if gin is more your speed, a Golden Remedy will be just the cure—with KIS gin, ginger, Kangaroo Island honey, and lemon, guaranteed to lift the spirits. With a host of other cocktails to excite the palate, Cactus is also serving up a range of local wines and an offering of beers.

Leow said, “The first weekend was really lively. The whole place smells amazing.”

The restaurant was buzzing on its first two nights, with around 80 diners filling the space as word spread about the new dinner service.

Cactus’ night offering is set to become somewhat of a missing piece for Kingscote’s night scene. Leow tells us the Kingscote dining scene is a tight-knit community, and venues often share ideas, recommendations, and even staff where needed.

He shouts out established favourite Amadio’s Vino e Cucina and newly opened wine and pasta bar Tirage, while praising Kingscote as a town brimming with character—where every venue is driven by passion and a deep love for what they do.

“Our menu full of Asian cuisine is a bit different to what the rest of Kingscote offers—and the variety of KI’s dining options is a part of what makes coming here great,” Leow said.

“I personally really enjoy the winter in KI. Everything’s turning bright green, and there’s wildlife all around you.”

“You’ve got all the attractions and the nature, but the island is almost a private experience this year,” Leow said.

Cactus first opened its doors in 2017, with owners Yen Leow and Louis Lark setting up a fresh café menu with an Asian twist in the heart of Kangaroo Island’s largest town. The pair have now launched several evening pop-ups, with the latest being a Mexican menu several years back.

“People are really excited,” Leow said. “Actually, they’ve been asking us for a long time to bring it back.”

“As a regional town, often in the off-season there’s not much happening, and the streets are pretty dead,” Leow continued. “But with a few new venues, we’re hoping you’ll see a bit more activity this winter.”

So as the cool air settles over Kangaroo Island and the off-season magic takes hold, Cactus is keeping the nights anything but quiet. Woks are sizzling, cocktails are shaking, and the scent of spice drifts through Kingscote’s streets.
