State Opera South Australia is offering a pretty amazing opportunity for a talented South Australian teen to take part in the upcoming season of Macbeth.
The production is set to run from September 7th to 16th, 2023, at Her Majesty’s Theatre. This open casting call provides an exclusive chance for young performers who believe they have what it takes to be part of a world-class production of Verdi’s adaptation of the iconic Shakespearean tragedy.
Experience is not required; all that is needed is a passion for the stage, and selected performers will be compensated as professionals. Read on for more information about the casting process.
State Opera South Australia, in collaboration with West Australian Opera, presents a unique co-production described by director Stuart Maunder as a captivating blend of “Braveheart meeting Game of Thrones.” This operatic adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth features a cast of 40 and is accompanied by the powerful Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
The role up for grabs is Fleance, the son of Banquo, who tragically falls victim to Macbeth’s relentless ambition to claim the throne of Scotland. Fleance, portrayed as a pre-adolescent (11-14 years old), appears in two different scenes throughout the opera.
Unlike the singing characters, Fleance does not require any singing skills. While acting experience, even at the amateur or school level, is appreciated, it is not compulsory for this role. Children from all cultural backgrounds are invited to audition for this opportunity.
Parents or guardians of the interested applicants must submit the applications on their behalf. By submitting the application, the parent or guardian agrees to ensure the performer’s availability for a total of 12 rehearsals and performances, scheduled between August 16th and September 16th (a detailed schedule will be provided on the website).
It’s important to note that this is a paid role, and the selected performer will be formally contracted by State Opera South Australia, treated as a professional artist alongside other cast members.
Throughout rehearsals and performances, minors will always be accompanied by a dedicated chaperone provided by State Opera. This ensures compliance with health and safety regulations and provides support when interacting with other professional figures, including the director, conductor, stage manager, and fellow cast and chorus members.
After the application deadline, the creative team will assess all submissions and shortlist several candidates who will be invited for an in-person meeting
