A six month trial of Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras will help manage and enforce Gawler’s parking rules. The technology will to provide valuable data to council to improve parking within the CBD – ensuring parking is available for those who need it.
The LPR system utilises vehicle-mounted cameras to capture parked cars, incorporating GPS location and time stamping data to determine if they’ve overstayed the parking limits or parked illegally.
The Town of Gawler is joining a number of interstate and South Australian councils that have already implemented similar systems, including Holdfast Bay, City of Salisbury and Bayside Council in Victoria.
Unlike the traditional parking inspectors – keeping parking in line by foot – this new tech is not weather dependant and offers a broader area of coverage. Mounted internally within patrol cars, the LPR equipment provides improved safety for officers and the ability to cover more ground in significantly less time.
Mayor Karen Redman, says the program will help council officers be more efficient.
“Officer’s will then have more time to spend on other tasks including unsightly premises, domestic animal call outs, illegal dumping, and fire protection,” Mayor Redman said.
“It is also to ensure with finite parking spaces that these are available for those who need them in accordance with relevant by-laws, benefitting business and service operators across Gawler.”
The trial will focus on several high-traffic locations across Gawler, including Murray St, Tod St, Adelaide Rd, Trinity Starplex, Xavier Evanston Campus, Gawler District College and the Gawler Administration Centre. Some areas however will still require the officers to check for parking breaches using the traditional method for permits such as disabled and other parking permits.
The trial, which will focus solely on testing the capabilities of the technology, officially began on Monday, 2 September 2024 with a two-week caution period where those found in violation of parking rules will receive warnings.
From Monday, 16 September 2024, the six-month trial will commence, during which fines will be issued for confirmed parking offences.
