Canine Cup races back into action this March

Canine Cup is back this March to provide animal lovers with a unique race-day experience while raising funds for animals in need.

The beloved alternative to the Adelaide Cup, Canine Cup burst onto the scene in 2018 when organizer Dani Slocombe decided to provide animal lovers with a unique race-day experience while raising funds for animals in need.

Fast forward to 2024, and Canine Cup is now an official Animal Welfare League event, raising crucial funds to directly support the more than 4,000 animals who come through their doors each year.

Anthony Cochrane, Marketing and Communications Manager for Animal Welfare League, expressed gratitude for Dani’s trust in handing over the event.

“Canine Cup has been her passion project for years, so for her to entrust us with this event is a significant vote of confidence in AWL,” Anthony said.

“Her dedication has paved the way for this year’s event, and we aim to surpass previous years’ success, raising even more funds to ensure that no animal in South Australia is left behind.”

Canine Cup features exciting races where dogs dash from one owner to another in a thrilling game of recall, with the added twist that they aren’t obligated to run if they don’t feel like it!

The race results are kept confidential, and attendees can guess the winners as part of their ticket price, with the chance to enter a raffle draw if their guess is correct.

There will be 6 races on the day in the following categories:

  • Geri-actives (dogs over 7 years old)
  • Supersized (any large breed)
  • Pocket Rockets (any small breed)
  • Oodles of Oodles (all the oodles)
  • All That Glitters is Gold (any golden coat breed)
  • Rescue Run (rescue pups)

Canine Cup is proudly cruelty-free, with plant-based food and drinks available for purchase from Plant 4 vendors. There will also be a silent auction where attendees can bid on a huge range of items with all proceeds going straight to feeding and housing vulnerable animals at Animal Welfare League.

Racegoers will have the opportunity to meet and greet the dogs, but please note that no other dogs are invited – the event is exclusive to those who raced. Like the Adelaide Cup, there will be a ‘fashions on the field’ competition for the humans, so make sure you come in your best race day outfit! There will also be a photo booth available all afternoon to help make it a race day to remember.
